Customers are ‘phubbing’ in shops, cafés, and pubs, and staff are sick of it

In crowded shopping areas and hectic cafes, more and more customers are spending too much time on their phones, seemingly unaware of the other human and non-human beings serving them and the surrounding environment. This practice also known as phubbing has started frustrating employees that need to communicate with each other in a rather basic way in order to perform their work efficiently and in a courteous manner, which has caused a tangible change in the way employees and customers experience their day-to-day service experiences.

Rising Trend Of Phubbing

Distraction ensured by devoting attention to a mobile phone and ignoring the real life has been on the rise, regardless of age brackets and setting. Where there was occasional distraction, there is now a prevalent behaviour in shops and service spaces.

Impact On Service Quality

Lack of customer engagement causes poor communication whereby mistakes occur, repetitions, delayed service among other issues which influence the effectiveness of staff and the effectiveness generally. When divided, employees tend to find it difficult to accomplish simple tasks.

Staff Unrest Soaring

Lack of eye contact and failure of customers to respond to simple exchanges is a common complaint employees make, claiming that they feel unheard or undervalued. This type of repetitive experience is a contributor of job dissatisfaction and emotional exhaustion with time.

Failing to communicate in Stores

In service settings, communication is critical, but phubbing disrupts the process and causes confusion leading to unwarranted misunderstanding. Even the simplest of interactions are complicated without attention.

Altering Customer Behavior Patterns

Customer behaviors have dramatically changed because online interactions are now a norm and most people give more priority to their gadgets than to face-to-face communication without thinking of the bigger picture. This is an evolution of social norms.

Effect On Workplace Morale

This is due to the unrecognized continual lack of appraisal by the customers which lowers morale of the employees and they feel they are no one even though they give attentive service to the customers. This may affect general working conditions with time.

Need For Mutual Respect

Service environments work well with a minimum respect and consciousness between the staff and customers in an environment whereby interactions between the two remain effective and efficient. Little attention is a big deal.

Striking a balance between Technology And Interaction

Although smartphones have become an irreplaceable aspect of our lives, striking a balance between using them and interacting with the real-life world can keep interactions in common environments positive and respectful. Conscious consumption is good for all.

Promoting Mindful Public Behavior

Creating awareness on the subject of phubbing can help people be more present when interacting with each other during daily activities, enhancing the experience of both employees and consumers. Just knowing can make a difference.
