I asked for free food, then tipped $100 for breadsticks

I did not expect that the desire to have a little of breadsticks would become one of those moments that I would still remember after I have finished eating. What started as a volunteering demand of something free would turn into an experience that altered my views on the nature of kindness, service, and generosity. When I got out of the restaurant, I had done something that was absolutely unintended even to myself. An evening defining my gratitude silently changed the perspective on it.
On a lowly evening, accidental desire

It began on a weekday that was pretty calm when I walked into my favorite neighborhood restaurant more of a walk than an appetite. I was not new there at all, and the fact that I was familiar with the smells and the feel of the place made me fully relaxed since I settled down in the seat.
The one time I had asked something out of the ordinary

As the waiter arrived to get my order, I jokingly told her whether I could get a chance of having some breadsticks free of charge. The comment made was not much, especially because I was smiling while saying it, assuming that it would just be swept away as an innocent joke.
One of the answers, which surprised me

The server was sincerely warm in her reply instead of rejecting the request and informed them that she would see what they could do. After some minutes more a basket of fresh and warm breadsticks set in on the table and this little piece of courtesy instantly changed the complexion of my visit.
Being aware of the attention to service

Due to savoring the breadsticks, I started focusing more on the staff members on how keenly they served all guests in the room. The generosity extended to me was revealed to be an exception and not an anomaly but a possessive silent professionalism that characterized the whole team.
Reflecting between bites

As I was finishing up with the final loaf of bread, I wondered why people do not use acts of generosity so often as they tend to be so genuine. Even the mere act of consenting to my brimming of light request had made the wave of goodwill which I could not disregard.
The verdict came as a shock to me

When the check came, I hesitated more than usual about what I would do in sharing on the experience that I had just had. I wrote a $100 tip almost without thinking it over, and this felt like the occasion warranted something memorable.
I was watching the reaction take place

I was about to leave when I saw the server look over the receipt and then he changed his look and smirked, his regular politeness replaced with real surprise. It was not a dramatic scene, but it was rather an understanding moment of appreciation which added meaningfulness to the gesture.
Leaving from a different point of view

Going out I found that it had been much more than free breadsticks or a good tip. It also made me think that even seemingly insignificant acts of kindness can sometimes form the greatest impressions, and the more they are unexpected, the more they are likely to have a great effect.
Why does the memory linger still with me?

To this day, that visit to the restaurant can be considered as evidence that generosity can start with something quite modest. What began as a request of free food eventually became a reminder on how considerate service and thankfulness can make an ordinary night to be a story worth sharing.
